Perspective ClassReception/Presentation, Friday, April 19, 7:00 - 9:30 PM,
Free. Approximate presentation duration: 1 hour.

Join us at a reception for John Lytton, a black and white fine-art photographer who uses classical techniques with digital, medium and large format cameras to record images of traditional subjects such as landscapes and architecture. Updating his pursuit of fine art black and white printing, John has made the transition from darkroom to digital fine art printing. After extensive calibration and testing of equipment, inks and papers, he now produces digital prints that rival traditional silver-based images in permanence and visual quality. John and his wife Trisha live in Tijeras, New Mexico. He has worked for the Boeing Company at NASA, Brown & Root construction company, and he taught photography and digital imaging at the Art Institute of Houston. John will discuss the enduring appeal of B/W, present a digital portfolio of his work, and show some of the photographic equipment he uses.

Seminar, Saturday, 1:00 - 3:00 or 4 PM

Seminar description:
Join us for a seminar taught by John Lytton, who will present "The Craft of Digital B/W Printing– Simply Crafted," in which he’ll discuss simple tips and techniques to produce and subtlety enhance a digitally printed B/W image, bringing it up to exhibition/competition quality.  Printing digital fine art B/W photographs need not be an arcane process nor a “push the button” action with hope but not understanding.  John will discuss basic concepts that work and why.

Participants should have moderate knowledge & proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, their computers, photographic equipment and inkjet printers capable of dedicated B/W printing modes.  Participants will also receive handouts of the seminar presentation and important topics discussed.

Objectives
  • Understand Initial B/W Considerations in Image Acquisition
  • Learn Several Procedures of Color-to-B/W Conversion
  • Recognize Three Levels of Contrast Control & Their Implementation
  • Understand Resolution Considerations in File Size and Printer Output
  • Learn the Concept & Importance of B/W Printer Linearization

Approximate seminar duration: 2 to 3 hours, depending on questions and answers.
